We are fortunate enough to live in Napa Valley part-time, and therefore have an abundance of wineries to visit and try new wines whenever we can. We also live on a small vineyard we’ve named after our regal pointer dog Grand Duke Winery. Seeing the grapevines go from bud break in the early spring to picking the grapes in early October, has taught us firsthand about the intense process of grape growing and wine making.

Some Wines We’ve Tried and Enjoyed

Wine: Expression 39, Anderson Valley, California –  Pinot Noir, 2014
Served with: Root Vegetable Pot Pie
Notes: Full-bodied, tannins, this wine is made by the famous William Hill whom Wine Spectator named one of the “Top 50 wine producers in the world who innovated, perfected and led the international campaign for higher quality wine”.

Wine: Niebaum Coppola Estate, Rutherford Napa Valley, California – Cabernet Sauvignon 1998
Served with: Roast Beef with Horseradish Cream
Notes: 15 years old by the time we opened it. First wine I ever bought from my 21st birthday, wine-tasting at the winery. Possibly the best wine I’ve ever tasted (agreed upon by dad and mom too). No bitter aftertaste/tannins. Very fruity full of cherry. Stood up to the test of time and was truly divine.

Wine: Troon Vineyard, Applegate Valley, Oregon – Semi-Sparkling White Wine 2012
Served with: Dungeness Crab and Artichokes
Notes: I loved this wine. It was very fruity and popped when hits your tastebuds. No bubbles like in a sparkling wine but did taste slightly carbonated. A very fresh and fun wine. Would be perfect in the summertime.

Wine: Chateau Montelena, Napa Valley, California – Chardonnay 2011
Served with: Stuffed Chicken with Apricot Sauce
Notes: Lush. Bright golden color. Lightly citrusy. Fruity but not cloyingly sweet.
