Everyday Cooking Adventures’ Cinnamon Vanilla French Toast with King’s Hawaiian Bread

This french toast recipe used to me my secret. The secret lies in both the type of bread used and the combination of spices. When family or friends come to visit I always get in the spirit of making this recipe to share with them. I also make it at least once a month even when no one else is around.

The secret bread I use is +King’s Hawaiian Bread which started in the 1950s in Hilo, Hawaii. Their tagline “Aloha in every bite™” rings true. I now use the round loafs for french toast, using the recipe below, and eat the square dinner rolls many nights of the week with pasta, chicken, steak, fish, whatever. The bread is sweet, airy, buttery, everything delicious rolled into one loaf. I buy it at Safeway but here’s where to find it near you: http://www.kingshawaiian.com/find-us/

When you are preparing the french toast, make sure you let the bread soak up the egg mixture for ONLY about 10 seconds per side. Then let the excess drip off a corner before putting it in the frying pan. I always add an extra dash or two of cinnamon because I’m a huge fan of it and sometimes let some more vanilla spill over into the bowl because I love that too. Serve it up with some bacon, sausage, fruit, whatever you please and don’t forget to serve with extra syrup on the side. YUM! Here’s my french toast with King’s Hawaiian Bread: #Kingshawaiianbread

Recipe by: Everyday Cooking Adventures, 2014

Serves: 3 – 4

Ingredients:

  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 Tbsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon (or more if desired)
  • dash of nutmeg
  • 1/2 round loaf, sliced 1/2″ thick, then each slice cut in half (about 10 pieces total)
  • To serve: powdered sugar, butter, syrup
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 250ºF. Heat a non-stick, large frying pan over medium heat (coat with cooking spray or 1 Tbsp. butter if not a non-stick pan). In a shallow bowl or pan, whisk together the eggs, milk and vanilla. Add the cinnamon and nutmeg and whisk just to combine.
2. Slice the round loaf as indicated above and dip each piece in the liquid, turning to coat each side. Let excess egg mixture drip off into the bowl. Add each piece of bread to the heated fry pan and cook, flipping once, until golden brown on each side about 3-4 minutes per side. Really let it get a crust on it or it will be soggy and mushy. Keep warm on a plate in the preheated oven until all slices are done. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and butter and serve with syrup.

Oh My Goodness! Why have I never thought of this?! I LOVE breakfast, although we don’t keep much bread in the house so we don’t usually do french toast. However, this would be great to do. Their bread is so good I am sure we would use it!
